Dallas CERT training emphasizes personal accountability for self, family and community by stressing the importance of personal preparedness and accountability.
Prior to an emergency, CERT members are expected to have an awareness of their own neighborhoods, and to pre-determine possible evacuation sites that will facilitate effective, safe and rapid response to emergencies.
With the assistance of the Dallas Police Department’s Interactive Community Policing Unit and established Crime Watch, Homeowner’s Associations, Civic and Church groups, the program has grown phenomenally since 2007.
Volunteers become CERT members when they’ve completed class sessions taught by local emergency management and professional first responders. Each class is approximately 2 ½ hours and includes practical and team-building exercises.
The final session includes a disaster simulation to give volunteers the ability to apply their newly acquired skills in a simulated environment. CERT Graduates receive a backpack with start-up supplies, a certificate of completion, and a Dallas CERT t-shirt.
WKNA currently has one CERT member and would like to encourage additional neighbors to join the training provided by the City of Dallas.
